Glasgow Parking: The Worry-Free Guide

Free to read. Worry-free to use, from cooltake.

Parking in Glasgow costs money. Knowing the rules does not. This guide sets out what Glasgow City Council has published about on-street parking, so you can read a line, check a permit and know what to do next.

The rules on this page come from the council's own pages, checked on 10 October 2026. Each one is linked in the section where it appears. This is a summary, not legal advice. When a sign and this guide disagree, follow the sign.

Where to check the rules

  • Each area has its own charge and maximum stay. For example, the City Centre Inner Zone has a 2 hour maximum stay, and all other areas have 3 hours.

3. Glasgow resident parking permits and zonescooltake.

Permits: what the council offers

  • Resident permit fees changed on 19 August 2025. They depend on the vehicle's CO2 emissions and on how many permits the address has.

  • The first annual resident permit is £80 for vehicles at 0 to 50 g/km of CO2, and £220 for 226 g/km and above. The same fees apply in all zones.

  • Once approved, a resident permit is valid for 12 months, and you can pay for a 3 or 12 month period.

  • All permits are virtual, so no permit needs to be displayed in the vehicle.

4. Paying for parkingcooltake.

Paying for parking

  • A penalty charge notice costs £100, or £50 if paid within 14 days of issue.

How to challenge a ticket

  • If you feel a notice was incorrectly issued, you can make an appeal online.

  • You cannot pay and appeal the same penalty charge notice.

  • If full payment arrives within 28 days of issue, the case is closed. Otherwise a notice to owner goes to the registered keeper, who can then make representations on certain grounds.

  • If the council rejects your representation, the council's page names the Parking and Bus Lane Tribunal Service as the independent adjudicator.

7. What is not confirmed yetcooltake.
